IBAS Board of Directors

This is a truly unique and rewarding opportunity to shape the future of both IBAS and the insurance industry. Directors often find board service to be an invaluable part of their professional development, as well as an engaging forum to give back, grow their networks, and make a meaningful difference within the brokerage community.

What it entails:

  • The IBAS board is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the association and provides oversight of the president and CEO.

  • This is a strategic board — not an operational board. As such, the IBAS board provides advice on but does not make decisions in the day-to-day operational management of the association.

  • Board terms are generally two years in length, to a maximum of six consecutive years, although exceptions to both may be made from time to time.

  • The board strives to hold quarterly in-person meetings in March, June, September, and either late November or early December (schedule is subject to change). Additional Zoom-based meetings may be periodically required. The IBAS AGM is held each October.

  • IBAS reimburses directors for expenses that are incurred as the result of board service.

  • Although it is not required, additional opportunities are available for directors to serve in an officer position (chair, vice chair, secretary-treasurer) as well as on other board and external committees. Officers are elected by directors in a special meeting immediately following the AGM.

  • Travel to both Saskatoon and Regina is required. Additional travel within Saskatchewan and Canada may be required, or optional, depending on the director’s role.

Who should consider this opportunity:

  • Any brokerage principal — or senior brokerage leader who has the support of their brokerage principal(s) — from within IBAS’s membership is encouraged to express interest.
  • If shortlisted, individuals who are not principals will be asked to provide a letter from the brokerage principal(s) affirming the candidate has the authority to represent and make decisions on the brokerage’s behalf in all IBAS-related matters.
  • The IBAS board strongly believes in equity, diversity, and inclusion. This involves proactively encouraging a balance of gender, age, rural versus urban representation, size of brokerage, perspectives, education, skill set, and experience.

A nominations committee from the board will recommend a slate of directors to be voted upon at the 2023 IBAS Annual General Meeting on Thursday, October 12, in Saskatoon. Approved nominees will immediately become directors following the vote.

General Insurance Council of Saskatchewan

IBAS appoints four representatives to the General Insurance Council of Saskatchewan (GICS). This is an excellent opportunity for individuals from within the IBAS membership who understand the role of GICS, can effectively speak to brokerage operations and business conditions, and are passionate about consumer protection.

Council terms are three years in length, to a maximum of six consecutive years. We encourage interested individuals to consult the GICS Bylaws — specifically, Part I and Part II — before expressing interest.

Appointee service will begin January 2024. A nominations committee from the IBAS board will recommend an appointee to be voted upon at the 2023 IBAS Annual General Meeting on Thursday, October 12, in Saskatoon.

IBAS Issuer Advisory Committee

The IBAS Issuer Advisory Committee represents the interests of all motor licence issuers in the province through IBAS’s interactions with the SGI Auto Fund. This committee was the driving force in the development and ratification of the new IBAS/SGI Auto Fund Strategic Accord, and is the primary consultative body for ongoing discussions surrounding SGI systems transformation, issuer remuneration, issuing workflows, and other critical files.

There have been 14 full voting members of this committee since its inception in November 2020. We are expecting to replace or add 2 – 4 positions, including at least one from a rural brokerage/issuer.

These are standing appointments with no specific terms, although the expectation would be to serve for a period of at least one year. While candidates do not necessarily need to be brokerage principals, each non-principal candidate must have the support of their brokerage and have the authorization to fully represent their brokerage on consequential votes pertaining to issuing policy.

We encourage interested individuals to consult the Committee Terms of Reference before expressing interest.

Appointee service will begin September 2023. A nominations committee from the board will recommend an appointee to be voted upon at the next IBAS board meeting on September 18.
