Job Description / Duties

At SGI, we are experiencing rapid growth in the P&C insurance market. We are looking for a senior leader to support our exclusive commitment to the broker distribution channel.

The Customer, Communications and Marketing Division is seeking an experienced leader with the ambition to take on an exciting opportunity as the Vice President, Corporate Business Development. The incumbent could be located in either Saskatchewan or Alberta. Reporting to the Executive Vice-President and Chief Customer Officer, this key senior leader will direct and monitor the planning, delivery and evaluation of the broker business development strategy, governance, policy and procedures across Canada. The successful candidate is committed to outstanding service, knows what it means to have a growth mindset, and leads by demonstrating accountability, change agility and excellence in leadership. In addition, the ideal candidate believes in the importance of collaboration and building relationships, has experience in the development and implementation of national programs and standards (broker compensation, segmentation, incentives, sales programs and training). Some travel will be required.


STRATEGIC PLANNING

-Leads the development and monitors the execution of a business development strategy to effectively manage the broker distribution channel across Canada.

-Leads the development, implementation and maintenance of a broker governance model including segmentation, compensation, portfolio transfer, financing, appointment, rehabilitation and termination, reviews and regional councils.

-Oversees the development, implementation and monitoring of audit governance ensuring adherence to the Business Development Strategy.

-Identifies and report risks associated with SGI’s exclusive commitment to the broker distribution channel; manage Risk Register item; recommend and monitor strategies to mitigate identified risks.

-Leads the design, development, implementation and evaluation of broker sales strategies, including annual broker business plan strategy, KPIs and reporting.

-Leads negotiations on strategic broker business partnerships and financing arrangements.

-Collaborates with Corporate and Regional VPs to ensure alignment and execution of strategic plans.

-Stays current with developments in the industry, researches competitive themes and trends identifying opportunities and solutions, preparing recommendations to optimize opportunity for product/service enhancements, and/or strategic improvements to support the company’s strategic initiatives.

-Interfaces with Corporate Analytics to define and maintain broker segments and leverage analytics data in the development of strategies, programs and broker reviews.

-Enhances profitability through supporting the establishment and continued adjustment of rate programs and delivery of competitive products.

-Supports providing necessary information for pricing projects.



CORPORATE BROKER PARTNERSHIPS

-Identifies potential strategic broker partners, alliances and relationships to expand SGI CANADA’s broker force, product lines and services/solutions.

-Main point of contact with strategically important and/or multi-regional brokers (e.g. Western Financial Group, Westland, HUB, etc.); facilitate regular planning sessions with senior management teams and enlists strategic partnerships to enhance broker strategies.

-Responsible for determining and approving financing approach and works to establish complex funding agreements.

-Oversees ongoing programs with brokers and/or organizations where SGI has made an investment (e.g. insurtechs, virtual brokers, etc.); negotiate financing and track deliverables.

-Directs ongoing monitoring and reporting on success measures (e.g. key performance indicators (KPIs), improvement indicators, growth, financial results, etc.).

-Oversees development and implementation of process to capture broker feedback and insight for consideration when developing programs and products.

-Develops and maintains strategic, effective and strong relationships with industry associations (e.g. broker associations, insurance councils, competitor work groups)

-Attends industry conventions and conferences.

-Oversees the planning and execution of the Annual SGI CANADA Brokers’ Convention.

-Coordinates the annual Business Development Planning process.



BROKER DEVELOPMENT

-Leads the development, guides and monitors the implementation and execution of a broker training and support program across Canada to support broker effectiveness, professionalism and corporate objectives.

-Identifies opportunities for sales improvement and implements changes through incorporating disciplined measurement tools and analysis of broker activities.

-Oversees analysis and reporting to demonstrate broker progress, leads, prospect opportunities, ensuring protection of corporate market share.

-Oversees development and delivery of Broker Academies, SGI University and other broker development related training.

-Coordinates strategies for broker-facing programs and tools with corporate partners (e.g. Broker Digital Technology) and external vendors (e.g. training providers).

-Measures broker success against broker plans and adjusts national strategies and supports to enhance outcomes.


STRATEGIC SENIOR MANAGEMENT LEADERSHIP

-Collaboratively, as part of the VP team, participates by providing Executive Leadership Team (ELT) insight and feedback on the short and long term strategic direction of the corporation and recommends adjustments based on current environment.

-Works collaboratively to understand and build alignment with divisional short and long term tactics to achieve corporate strategies.

-In collaboration with ELT and other team members determines resource commitments and capacity to deliver on the organization’s goals and strategies.

-Supports the execution of company succession plans, ensuring developmental opportunities that provide progressive movement in employees’ growth and development.

-In collaboration with EVPs, submits, represents and presents operational and strategic reports and requests to ELT and the Board of Directors.

-Leads, directs and monitors change management strategies/plans to support and align to divisional and corporate strategies and to gain acceptance of divisional strategies by other business areas and partners.

-Builds a culture of leadership and accountability to effectively deliver on strategic and corporate strategies, ensuring integration with employee performance development and career development plans.

CORPORATE MANAGEMENT

-Ensures programs and policies are in alignment with corporate, strategic and divisional strategies.

-Manages risk in area of authority.

-Prepares, reviews, manages and/or approves departmental/divisional budgets.

-Prepares decision requests, decision and/or information items and/or SGI board items.

-Ensures that the Health, Safety and Emergency Management Policy is applied in area of responsibility, including development, implementation and managing of program components specific to departmental health and safety requirements.

-Makes decisions for departmental operations that are efficient, effective and in alignment with strategic direction and priorities.

-Ensures department and program policies, procedures and guidelines are in compliance with applicable federal and provincial legislation and regulations; implements and evaluates changes to legislation and regulations in area of authority.

-Establishes and maintains an effective system of internal controls to support reliable financial reporting and compliance in accordance with applicable laws and regulations within the span of control and communicates the importance of internal controls to staff.

 

Qualifications / Required Skills

-Knowledge of strategy development and execution.

-Knowledge of the insurance industry across Canada and the range of property and casualty insurance products available.

-Knowledge of the independent broker model and other insurance distribution channels across Canada.

-Knowledge of organizational units, and how they interact to support the corporation’s operations.

-Knowledge of how financial information contributes to management understanding and decisions.

-Knowledge of project management methodologies and techniques required to plan, manage and execute projects.

-Ability to professionally interact and negotiate with senior management representatives from broker organizations, industry associations and other insurance companies.

-Ability to write high-quality reports that are clear, concise and targeted to the audience.

-Ability to prepare and deliver effective presentations.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

-A four-year degree from an accredited post-secondary institution in a field of study such as Business or Social Sciences.

-An industry recognized professional designation such as Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) or Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP).

-Ten years of leadership experience with increasing responsibility in the insurance industry.

-Five years’ experience working with insurance distribution (i.e. brokers, agents, advisors, MGAs, etc.).

-An alternative combination of relevant education and experience may also be considered.
